Regional Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction in the School Environment: Caribbean stakeholders gather on November 22 and 23 in Guadeloupe.

22 November 2023

PIRAC is organizing its Regional Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction in the Educational sector on November 22 and 23 in Guadeloupe. This workshop brings together a number of technical representatives from the education and risk prevention sectors, with the aim of reinforcing experience sharing and working towards a Caribbean dynamic on these topics. About twenty participants are taking part in the discussions.

The event, organized in partnership with CDEMA (Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency), is enabling all participants to share their innovative initiatives and tools developed in their territories. Based on existing frameworks such as the Caribbean Safe School Initiative (CSSI), this meeting is an ideal opportunity to identify synergies and  common actions in the Caribbean.

The CSSI has identified 3 areas to move forward safer schools. Among them, two are at the heart of discussions at this meeting: crisis management in schools and risk and resilience education. For the French Red Cross, it’s also an opportunity to showcase the accomplished work in these areas in Guadeloupe.

Indeed, these two days of workshops are a continuation of the work that began in 2019 with the Paré pa Paré project, to raise awareness on disaster risks among the Guadeloupean population (especially the youngest). Building on this experience, PIRAC then launched the Let’s Be Prepared project, to share its methodology across the Caribbean and participate in the regional dynamic of risk reduction in schools. This project, supported by CDEMA, the Guadeloupe Region and the French Ministry of Education, is the backdrop to the Regional Meeting on Risk Reduction in the School Environment on November 22 and 23.
