The PIRAC celebrates the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, which is held every year on October 13. Several activities are proposed to raise awareness on disaster impact reduction and adaptation to climate change in Guadeloupe and more broadly in the Caribbean.
Paré pa Paré: all resilient to natural hazards!
On October 12, 2022, a hundred people participated in a workshop to raise awareness on preparedness to natural hazards in Guadeloupe. Children, teachers, school principals and national education inspectors were present.
The volunteers of the Guadeloupe Red Cross and the PIRAC team animated all the stands for the public. The participants could discover the tools of the project in seven different stands:
- Reception: Presentation of the PIRAC and the project Paré Pa Paré
- Natural hazards: presentation of all hazards presenting a risk in Guadeloupe
- Earthquake: show the intensity of an earthquake and simulate the friction of tectonic plates
- Seismic kit: present the tool and its pedagogical stakes to the teaching staff
- Flooding: raise awareness of the importance of the organization of the territory and the importance of knowing if one is in a flood zone
- Virtual reality: to raise awareness on the importance of preparation in case of flooding through an immersive reality experience
- Catakit and Family Safety Plan: raise awareness on the implementation of a Family Safety Plan and an emergency kit
This event is an opportunity to strengthen the Paré pa Paré program to develop the risk culture among young people, the general public and vulnerable people in Guadeloupe. The educational and entertaining tools developed within the framework of the program were presented to students and teachers. This event was organized by the Regional Council, in partnership with the Rectorat.
All the partners of the event: the Region of Guadeloupe, the Academy of Guadeloupe, the Directorate of Environment, Planning and Housing (DEAL), the Departmental Council of Guadeloupe, the Prefect of Guadeloupe and the FEDER.
READY Together awareness campaign: “the climate is changing… and you?!”
This year, the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction will focus on improving people’s access to multi-hazard early warning systems and disaster risk information and assessments by 2030.
From 6 to 20 October, PIRAC and its partners are running a major regional awareness campaign. The READY Together/3 Oceans regional awareness campaign will focus on the impacts of climate change in the Caribbean and on enhancing adaptation solutions that can be replicated to increase the resilience of the populations to the adverse effects of climate-related risks. Awareness messages are being disseminated through social media via different animated posts.
3 Oceans Program: reducing the impact of disasters in three areas
Implemented since 2019, with the support of the French Development Agency (AFD), the 3 Oceans project reduces the impact of natural disasters, health crises and the effects of climate change on three ocean basins: the Caribbean, the southwest Indian Ocean and the South Pacific.
PIRAC, through the 3 Oceans project, is developing actions that aim to strengthen the disaster preparedness of local and regional actors, Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, in a coordinated manner and by developing actions focused around the stages of the disaster risk management cycle: anticipation, preparedness, prevention and response actions.
